Howard County's Cold Weather Shelter Program Collection Begins February 08, 2010
Howard County's Cold Weather Shelter (CWS) Program - an amazing collaborative effort to help those in our area who are most in need .
What is the Howard County's Cold Weather Shelter (CWS)? How does Beth Shalom contribute ?
The Howard County Cold Weather Shelter is a collaborative partnership of Howard County Government, 15 area churches, Beth Shalom synagogue, and non-profit agencies. The objective is to provide a safe and warm haven for homeless families and individuals during the cold winter weather. This annual project lasts nearly four months beginning at Thanksgiving through the end of March. We are partnering with Locust United Methodist Church, who this year will be joining Bethany UMC, where families and individuals will be staying. Churches house up to 25 guests per night (from about 5:30 in the evening until 7:00 the following morning) for a one or two week period. While Bethany UMC will be hosting from 1 thru 15 March, Locust UMC and Beth Shalom will be participating for the first week of March.
Beth Shalom's Hebrew High School students will make bagged lunches for 5 days. We will also try to provide some of the required transportation. This involves driving guests of the CWS from Starbucks at the Columbia Mall to Bethany UMC (2875 Bethany Lane in Ellicott City). The main pick-up time is 5:30 pm and we would like to have a contingency car on standby for 7:00 pm, in case some of the guests are delayed. Transportation is also needed between 6:30 and 6:45 in the morning, to get the guests to the mall by 7:00 am. If you are able to drive any of these times, please identify how many passengers can fit in your vehicle. Please contact Alan Seidman at 410-381-6860 or email alan1@comcast.net <mailto:alan1@comcast.net> to offer transportation or if you have any questions.
