Adult Education

Beth Shalom offers learning opportunities throughout the year, sponsoring speakers, discussion groups, classes, and holiday programs. Programs are held at various times to accommodate congregants’ different schedules, including Shabbat, holidays, and weekdays during the day and evenings. These programs are open to the public.

The adult education brochure provides more information, including dates and times. This brochure is mailed to every household (in late summer for fall programs and in early winter for winter/spring programs) as well as available here online.

Scholar-In-Residence — This is typically a Shabbat weekend full of lectures and discussions with an invited educator, thinker, speaker, or artist. This April 12 – 14, join Samson Nderitu Njogu to learn about the Jewish Community in Uganda and greater Africa. The weekend includes dinner, discussions, services and learning.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot — A full evening of multiple education sessions led by rabbis and educators held on Erev Shavuot, along with dairy desserts and snacks

Selichot — Programs on topics relating to repentance and Israel respectively. Usually we watch and discuss a movie that addresses these topics.  A selichot service, penitential prayers and inspiration in preparation for the Days of Repentance follow the program.

Author speaker series — Jewish authors read excerpts from and discuss their recent novels and non-fiction books. These programs are usually held in the spring. Come back for announcements of this year’s authors.

Lecture and Discussion Series — Our classes include:  

      • Conversational Hebrew Class led by native Hebrew speaker and educator (and congregant) Ora Fisch is an intermediate level class, with emphasis on grammar, conversational Hebrew, and vocabulary acquisition. (Tuesdays at 2:00 pm)
      • Talmud ZOOOM! with Rabbi Amy Scheinerman. Explore stories from the Talmud about courage, decency, deception, and fear. (Wednesday evenings at 6:30-7:30)
      • Preparing for the Passover Seder: Way More Than Spring Cleaning! with Rabbi Jennifer Greenspan (Tuesday evenings beginning April 2 at 7:45)
      • Torah Trope for Beginners with Cantor Rebecca Apt (Thursday evening beginning April 4 at 7:45)
      • The Oldest Hate:  A Brief History of Jew Hatred and How to Recognize and Combat It with Rabbi Susan Grossman (Tuesday evenings beginning May 7 at 7:00)
